This years United Nations Climate Change Conference is being held in Lima, Peru, lasting from December 1-12. It marks the 20th yearly session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) and the 10th session of the Meeting of the Parties (CMP 10).
Background: In 1992, countries joined an international treaty, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to consider what they could do to limit average global temperature increases and the resulting climate change. In 1997 they developed the Kyoto Protocol which binds developing countries to emission reduction targets. Canada withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol in 2012. There are now 195 Parties to the Convention and 192 Parties to the Kyoto Protocol.
