Facts about increasing forest cover in Europe: Forest Ecosystem

The forest cover is around 35% of the land area within is 190 million ha. Forests act as an economic resource by employing over 3.5 million people. Forests provide ecosystem services by protecting water and soils and preventing floods also who can forget, filtering the air. The mitigation of climate change is another important beneficial factor. The forest structure in Europe is therefore becoming more uniform but most forests are in poor health. Invasive species are an increasing problem that is devastating forest cover. In the coming years climate change is likely to harm forest ecosystems by bringing about changes in disturbance regimes like fire.
