  • Deforestation:
    “Clearance or clearing is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a non-forest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use.”

 

  • Deforestation causes:
    • Agriculture
    • Mining
    • Urban sprawl
    • Fuel
    • Building material
    • Money
    • Ranches
    • Biofuel – ethical issue of cutting down food for a fuel source

Facts:

  • 96% of forests are covered under federal, provincial law
  • 30% of forests cover the world
  • 2/3 of all terrestrial biodiversity live in forests
  • Deforestation 20% of all carbon emissions
  • Question on high grading: what is the source of high grade wood and low grade wood
  • Logging affects canopy cover of the forests and changes the microclimate

Conclusion:
Educational and political reform is needed to improve forest management
